ROCK STAR ALERT!!!! And boy did book #1 turn so many of us inside-out. What. A. PREMISE!!!! And guess what??!! Book #3 was just announced (cover reveal and blurb and all!!) 😀

Jeanie: I’m 86% into Night Shifts Black – that blurb totally sold me! And I’m finally at that part where the “chair” is explained. Eeeep the feels!

Kim: I read Night Shifts Black the day it released! It’s MUST reads. A straight forward look in to depression without kid gloves and a HELLUVA read. I stumbled on it before any reviews not really knowing anything other than a former musician was in it ~ that was my initial draw. Boy oh boy, I kept thinking about this hidden gem that way more people need to read!!!

Jean: Okay girls, I’m only gonna say this once (well I might repeat myself). I’m reading Tracing Holland, the 2nd book in the Night Shifts Black series and FRIGGING LOVING IT! Luke Craven! Loved the first one too.

Tessa: Honestly, NSB is a little slow to start, because of the nature of the book, but I really loved it. I couldn’t put it down. Everything felt real to me. The erm, change from the expected, I saw some people didn’t like, but I honestly loved. It felt right, while the expected truly didn’t. *grins*

Eli: I finished Night Shifts Black, and I was speechless. I couldn’t review it right away or talk about it. I just FELT it. I absorbed all the “feels” that come with it. AMAZING. One of my ultimate favorites. …It is overwhelmingly beautiful. It touches your heart. LOVED IT! Must read!

Jean: NIGHT SHIFTS BLACK!! I HOPE YOU LOVE IT AS MUCH AS I DID!! AND YOU MUST READ TRACING HOLLAND TOO! MUST!

About book #1:

His name is Luke. But nobody knows that. He was an iconic musician before he gave up music. But nobody knows that either. They also don’t know he’s twenty-seven, that he used to have an infectious laugh, and that he’s way too young to be widowed. They certainly don’t know the rest of his tragic story.

All they know is that he comes into their café at the same time every morning and stares at the same chair at the same table. They know he’s strange. They know he interrupts their breakfast with a cold blast of air as he hovers in the doorway, mustering the courage to confront a piece of furniture.

No one asks why. No one cares. He’s fine with that. He’s done with life. This isn’t even his story anymore. It’s actually Callie’s, the young writer who sat in his chair one day.

This novel is a work of fiction and intended for mature readers. Events and persons depicted are of a fictional nature and use language, make choices, and face situations inappropriate for younger readers. Please note this book also addresses the issues of depression and suicide in a compassionate, realistic manner. This book can be read as a standalone, but the story continues in Tracing Holland.

Guest Review (my sister!!) – Invader by C.J. Cherryh

Invader: Book Two of Foreigner (Foreigner series 2) by C.J. Cherryh
Review by Johanne Pearl Couturier
4 stars
Looks like Bren Cameron’s life is a problem… a big problem for everyone it seems, even people from his own government. Stuck between his job dictating what he should do and say as a diplomat, and his own respect for the people he is living with, the choice is not going to be easy.
In the sequel to Foreigner, C.J. Cherryh continues the saga of “the man stuck in the middle”, in a world where he has to judge who is with him and who is against him… while the leader he is associated with makes him look like a pawn on a chessboard. Atevi are divided now and more than one group want his life to end while other are not sure yet… seeing him as a very dangerous disturbance with his wild ideas. His life and work are already complicated enough but other players decide to reappear from the past… a past Bren knows less about than he thinks and, suddenly, he wishes that some of these people could be with him, making is loneliness as a human being more bearable, if only by teaching a new guest what the Atevi want him to learn.
Bren is not the only one who wants to be informing the new group of the intricacies of this world and the scales could be tipped in a way that could create another war. He has to use all his talents and knowledge to make sure no one has clear advantage over the other, but what does he really want? Who is he really? Can he develop feelings for an Ateva on whom he does not know much, beside the fact she is a member of the assassins’ Guild? She clearly expressed her curiosity about intimacy but can a relationship develop between two species who do not understand each other at a core level?
So many things are happening in this book, it is insane! You’re wracking your brain with “what ifs”? Trying to find who is loyal and who is not? Being surprised by twists and turns? Go ahead! Give yourself this pleasure and be immerged in a world that you get to understand more and more as you follow Bren’s train of thoughts. If you think your life is not easy, try to walk a mile in this human’s shoes… or ride on the back of a Macheiti for that matter. Did I tell you I love those beasts? Oooops, yes I did already! Lol
Well, time for me to go on reading book 3 so I can find out how the new “guests” will adapt to all this madness! And if his 9 feet black alien beauty’s curiosity, making him so uneasy around her, will be satisfied or shift to that new someone…

C. J. Cherryh – Foreigner Series Reading Order

OMG this series is HUGE!!! 15 books, and my sister is going crazy for it! She’s review the first two books right here on the blog, but quickly… she describes it this way:

Johanne: It is sci-fi and very political (it’s about two species – humans that arrive on a planet that’s already colonized) and so interesting, but there is romance and I can’t wait for it to happppppeeennnn!!!!

About book #1:

The groundbreaking novel that launched Cherryh’s eponymous space opera series of first contact and its consequences…
It had been nearly five centuries since the starship Phoenix, lost in space and desperately searching for the nearest G5 star, had encountered the planet of the atevi. On this alien world, law was kept by the use of registered assassination, alliances were defined by individual loyalties not geographical borders, and war became inevitable once humans and one faction of atevi established a working relationship. It was a war that humans had no chance of winning on this planet so many light-years from home.
Now, nearly two hundred years after that conflict, humanity has traded its advanced technology for peace and an island refuge that no atevi will ever visit. Then the sole human the treaty allows into atevi society is marked for an assassin’s bullet. THe work of an isolated lunatic? The interests of a particular faction? Or the consequence of one human’s fondness for a species which has fourteen words for betrayal and not a single word for love?

HAPPY FRIDAY!!! It’s time for another weekend of reading and I’m going in!! I’ve just started a book that comes up the most in my “reader questions” (and has been featured as a reader question a few times, in fact). It came up again today, and I was all… “THAT’S IT! I’m reading this now!!” It’s a sign, I just know it… and I’m SO in the mood for this.
What I’m reading now? Something in the Way (Something in the Way Series Book 1) by Jessica Hawkins

Summer: Book 1 and 2 are SO good tons of angst!!!!!
Allie: You won’t be disappointed Maryse!!! This series has been on mind for MONTHS!!!
Grey: I’m dying here… Maryse! you cheated… I thought we were waiting. *giggle*
Maryse: I can’t help myself anymore, Grey! I know I’ll suffer when ‘m sitting here dying for book #3 but I. Just. GOTTA!

Take a look at what else we found for the weekend!! :D

  • Cockloft by K.C. Lynn <— K.C. LYNN’S LATEST IS LIVE!!! FIREFIGHTER ALERT!! They can’t stand each other, but OH BOY do they want each other… “When the beautiful boutique owner and sexy firefighter meet in the most unlikely situation, their two worlds collide, creating an explosion of misperceptions and combustible heat, trapping them in a fire they never saw coming.”
  • Wish You Were Here: A Novel by Renee Carlino <— RENEE CARLINO RECENT RELEASE & WE HAVE FEEDBACK!! Cheryl LOVED IT!!!
Cheryl: I just finished Wish You Were Here. I cried- a big, ugly cry in my daughter’s hospital room. (guess I can read Atheist now Maryse and Amy!) WYWH was sweet, heartbreaking and somewhat angsty. I didn’t like the h too much in the beginning because she was so wimpy, but she evolved because of the circumstances she went thru and I grew to like her by the end. Loved Adam and Seth. My heart broke for them and I felt the emotions they were going thru and wanted what they wanted to come true. Beautiful writing as always with this author. My only complaint is the ending tied up too quickly and I wanted more.
bev: …have you read Laura Florand? Her Once Upon A Rose … She has a sort if whimsical style. I love the meet cute in this one. You can disappear to France for a bit if you want to borrow it.

Jan: I second bev’s rec of Laura Florand. I like the one bev mentioned, and there is a new one coming out soon in that series – sah-weet! My fav series of hers is Amour et Chocolat. I floved The Chocolate Touch (Amour et Chocolat Book 4) and The Chocolate Heart (Amour et Chocolat Book 5). Paris, chocolates, hot chefs, a bit of angst, some sexy romance… what’s not to love? Oh Dominque, oh Luc, you gorgeous, gorgeous men………. Vive la France!

  • Latte Girl by Katia Rose <— THE HEIR TO A SECURITY COMPANY COMES INTO THE COFFEE SHOP… “…Jordan Knox is enough to send her heart racing faster than a triple shot of espresso, and when the attraction proves to be mutual, no hidden corners or empty offices are safe from their game of cat and mouse. But when she’s ready to drop the pretenses, Jordan continues to hold back...”

Tasha: I just finished The Lying Game by Ruth Ware, LOVED it!!! I know I said it might take me a while on GR, Bev, but I couldn’t put it down! I mean, it hooked me right away, but by about 20%, probably, I was getting super invested, and by 40/50% I was totally and completely hooked, and I had to keep reading. Ah, so one of my favorites! I can’t attest to her other books bc this is the only one I’ve read of hers, but I’ll definitely be checking them out. Amy, if you haven’t read this one, I feel like it has your name written all over it!
  • Butcher (Devil Souls MC Book 3) by LeAnn Ashers <— BIKER CLUB ENFORCER ALERT!! “…I see who he really is. I see a man who will do anything for the people he cares about. • The Unrequited by Saffron A. Kent <— FORBIDDENY ALERT!!! 😉 JENNIFER WENT CRAZY FOR THIS ONE!

  • Trying Not to Love You: (Dragon Skulls MC) by Rose Briner <— BIKER BOOK ALERT!!! SHE HAS TO RUN TO THE ENEMY… “...For Kara Zaragoza, surviving is her only option after her husband is killed.
