Book Review – Curveball by Mariah Dietz

CURVEBALL
This one just ‘caught my eye BIG time a week or so ago as a new release. TOTAL blurb jolt!!! eek

And it appears it was actually a re-release, ’cause I had a bunch of our book-buds jump in and say they read this one last year and loved it. 😀

Maryse: OMG I WANNA READ THIS!! Sounds like unrequited love/super-angsty awesomeness!! SHE’S FINALLY FALLING FOR SOMEONE, BUT HER BEST FRIEND FELL FOR HIM TOO…

Jessica: It’s really good! I read it last year and still think about.

Soooo… it’s an oldie but goodie and I’m thrilled to have read it. I’d say it has almost a “Devney Perry” feel to it and it was right up my life-trouble alley! Yep! It has just enough tension and issues to keep me reading and wondering where it would all go. Various things that had me hooked, and stressing, and swooning. Everything in here was my catnip.

  • An affair with a local “hero” that lands our heroine in the role of town “pariah” (and he gets to remain the “hero”)
  • a child from said affair, so she’s stuck there (and her child has health issues).
  • Unrequited love and heartache. She’s still not over him.
  • a new guy in town (hot firefighter that comes to her son’s rescue a few times). No matter how jaded she is about love she’s feeling butterflies, but…
  • her very protective (and beautiful) best friend is also falling for that firefighter (and they live right next door to each other)… OH. OH. Eeeeeeep!!

I went into this one stressed on so many levels (which I LOVE) and had an idea where it would eventually go, but was still on edge anticipating the inevitable angst and trouble looming.

“Are you interested in him?”
I cut her search off. There’s a long pause.
“I . . . No. Maybe? . . . I don’t know.”
“All I hear are lies.”

And it did not disappoint. Why? Because it actually surprised me a few times and even made my stomach hurt for her.

“I am over him,” I reply automatically.

She doesn’t argue. We both know I’m not. When you give your heart away, there’s no way to fully get it back. Pieces will be left behind, lies will drill holes, deceit will cause cracks, and the feeling of being unwanted will create a doubt that your heart was ever whole.

I struggled with the heroine at first (she’s seriously jaded when it comes to meeting someone new – to the point where I felt bad for some of the men she didn’t give a chance to),

“Who have you blacklisted?”

“Firefighters.”

….but overall… I “got” her.

Cheryl: I did read Curveball. Not as angsty as I thought it would be and the friend relationship is part of that reason. Good read, but could have slapped the h a few times- somewhat of a broken record with her reasoning. Also wasn’t surprised about a twist. Still a good read.

Right there with you, Cheryl. Although that twist DID surprise me!
I started wondering if… I… er… maybe something… else? And I thought maybe… about that one *ahem* character. Good things? Bad things? Wrong impressions? But yeah. Was it going to… go there instead? Was I hopeful for that? What did I want now?? I was suddenly open to a few possibilities

and…

And then SURPRISE!!!! eek Whoa.

The title makes so much sense on a literal and figurative level. Some excellent curveballs, indeed. Best of all? One that I didn’t see coming at all… that had me gasping. And one that I’m still wondering about (or suspicious of).

I wonder if there will be a part 2? It DOES NOT end on a cliffhanger, but it did end with a few somewhat open-issues that still worry me (LOL! As if these are real people – but yes I’m worried!!), and I’d love to explore those further.

Good morning and Happy Monday everyone!! The early bird book releases are exciting today!! Some angsty-sounding choices (unrequited love!!) and dark reads (like that one to the left)! 😀 Plus a few of our favorite authors in the bunch too.
But first… Three Things:
1.) I cooked up a storm yesterday now that I can have groceries again (I have my fridge and I LOVE IT!! It’s got TONS of space in it even if it is a side-by-side). It felt so good to get back to my routine. 🙂
2.) I started watching “Abducted in Plain Sight” yesterday on Netflix and OMG that is just INSANE!!! How the parents allowed this predator so close to their daughter is so scary.
3.) I finished CURVEBALL over the weekend and I loved it! It’s not too crazy or angsty, but has plenty of everything to keep it interesting – she’s the town pariah, and he’s the new firefighter in town and her best friend sets her sights on him. Eeeeep! Oh yes it throws us a few curveballs, for sure! I’d say it has almost has a “Devney Perry” feel to it. HERE’S MY REVIEW.

Tessa: Corrupt was so goooooood.  :D …in Corrupt, I like Damon the most!

Grey: I’ve read Corrupt. It was SOOOO good! …definitely read Corrupt!!! 4.5 star read for me. Dark, twisted, pretzel tummy, yummy mind f*ck! Loved it!

marina: I loved Corrupt and even reread it a month ago in prep to read Hideaway.

Jean: Just finishing up Hideaway which was epic!!!! Both Corrupt and Hideaway are MUST READS!!!

Grey: I finished Hideaway… OMG! #DevilsNight loved it!!!

Tessa: …Hideaway was awesome. It was just as dark and messed up as the first one, if not more so. Just… you all need to read Corrupt and Hideaway. Now, my sick, twisted self is most interested in the next one, Kill Switch, with my favorite of the Horsemen.

My boyfriend’s older brother is like that scary movie that you peek through your hand to watch. He’s handsome, strong, and completely terrifying. The star of his college’s basketball team and now gone pro, he’s more concerned with the dirt on his shoe than me.

First… HAPPY BIRTHDAY ELA!!!!!! She’s one of our long-time book-crew members, she’s hilarious, and loves to “cap-lock-scream” at us when she’s excited about a book. I LOVE THAT about her.
Also… MY FRIDGE IS COMING TODAY!! I’m excited. 😀 Finally, I can go grocery shopping again. I’ve been surviving on mini-meals and stuff I can grab quick and not have to keep for later. It’s incredible how much we can take our appliances for granted until we lose one. Yikes!!
ANNNNND: bev has a buddy-read request, and both sound perfect! I actually already have the first book she suggests! 😀 She asks:

bev: Hey, we should all read the The Ghost Bride for a Valentines buddy read. Netflix is adapting it soon. Or The Sun Is Also a Star. It’s being adapted soon too.

She’s an executive assistant (with a “type”) and he’s a tattoo artist… “…Kitty was not only beautiful but also incredibly intelligent—except when it came to relationships. It seemed if a guy was a loser, corrupt, deadbeat or unavailable, she was completely and utterly attracted to him. She definitely had a “type,” and all of them had been one bad decision after another…“
  • The Silent Patient by by Alex Michaelides <— PSYCH-THRILLER RECENTLY RELEASED & Tasha J LOVED IT! P.S. She’s my book-twin (or one of ’em 😉 ) and what she loves, I LOVE. SQUEEEEEEE!!!
Tasha J: So, I just finished The Silent Patient and holy cow! It reads so well, sucks you right in and keeps you invested till the very end. I’m telling you, I had thought up what I thought to be every possibility of what happened and was completely, totally shocked at the outcome. Jezebel vibes, peeps! …Only because of shock value, and the great story, not cause they match or anything.
Maryse: OMG TASHA!!! That book is for me!!!!! I always love when you freak out over a thriller. 😀 !!!

Danielle: I read Boys of Brayshaw High by Meagan Brandy last week and am going to reread it again because I haven’t been able to get it out of my head, and no other book has been able to live up to it since. If you haven’t read it yet put it on your radar. I’m a sucker for bully books!
Chelli: Hope all is well with you don’t know if this book has come up in your radar but Boys of Brayshaw is oh soooo good. I’m a die hard Fallen Crest High fan and this book has a similar feel to it!!! Can’t wait for the next one to come out
Jenn: I am reading “Boys of Brayshaw High” I was hooked just in the first few chapters.

Kathy P: For those of us, cough, cough over the age of 40, I have really enjoyed the latest books by L.B. Dunbar. She has heroines and heroes over the age of 40 in second chance romances.
I have read 3 of the 4 and would definitely recommend them. A nice change of pace 🙂

Stacey: Finished “The Boy and His Ribbon” and also “A Girl and Her Ren” last night and let me say….WOW……just…..there really are no words. Book hangover of your life. BEST OF 2018. It has been years since a book gave me all the feels that this one did and these words still feel inadequate to describe this book…..so Ill just say this…..This book sneaks its way into your soul, grabs a hold, rips it out, and doesnt let go. I can tell it is one of those books that stays with you literally FOREVER.

Donna: Just finished reading Taken Without Her Consent by Mitzi D. Lane…what a great read !!
Northernstar: Kristen Ashley’s Free was an emotional read for me because I loved all her Chaos series so much. I agree with the other posts that there was a lot going on in this book and the story packed a lot in. I missed the usual depth of the other books, but she did tie up a lot of loose ends. Known for her epilogues, KA didn’t disappoint and it was a beautiful ending. While I am sad to say goodbye to the chaos family it was a great ride (pun intended).
JulieO: I finished FREE last night. Was good, I always enjoy K.A. books, some more than others. I got confused quite a bit. Too many characters and dual names because of MC names. Felt like she was trying to pack too much into this last book and set up a few characters for a new series? Any thoughts on this anyone? I do have to say that KA does the best epilogues though.
