These books were so good, that we forgot to eat! Part one…

Ahhhhh the ever-coveted *love* fog. You know the one. You’ve been in it before. Where you can subsist on love and water, alone.

You can’t think straight, see straight, but you’re as happy as can be…

“Vivre d’amour et d’eau fraîche…” (it’s a popular french expression, and my mom used to say this to me, whenever I’d have a new crush as a teen). And yes… *sigh* Boy-crazy me had lots of ‘em. rolleyes

My latest famous actor crush? I’d re-watch his movie a million times – in a row – and not eat for days. My latest rock star crush? I’d listen to his voice (yah, it seems it was always the singer for me), and not eat for days. My latest “real-boy” crush? Yeah… you get the picture.

I couldn’t eat. I couldn’t sleep. All I could do was daydream. Whether he is “real-life” or not, it still has the same effect on me. What. A. Rush! And apparently, I’m addicted to it.

And when I realized, books (er… certain “guys” in books) could give me the exact same rush, I was in potential “book-love” heaven. I devour book after book after book, just hoping to have that feeling again. And every once in awhile, I hit that jackpot!! While I can often crush on the “hero” of any book I’m reading, some just hit me harder, and last longer, than most. And this is what this post is about.

The books that were so good I forgot to eat. These heroes put me in a love fog. There must be magic in these books, and even though I know they’re “fiction” my heart was (and still is) fooled, ’cause I still love ‘em with as much intensity now, as I did, then. These hit me the hardest. I had a visceral, physical reaction to them, mostly involving my heart (which I think is my favorite part of me!)…

AND… our fellow readers have been indulging me with their favorites too! (see below)

So here they are. These books were so good, they affected us so hard, that we forgot to eat:

Maryse: For me, the most obvious and long-term “no-eating” books were:

  • Twilight (of course) – OMG I couldn’t think straight after that one (I would go to work in a daze). I think it’s the hardest I’ve ever fallen for a fictional character (but alas, Edward has been replaced). By Travis. :)
  • I could go on and on about my favorite scenes Beautiful Disaster that still give me shivers right now. I know that I forgot to eat (’cause of my *love fog*) even after Beautiful Disaster (another one that had me going to work in a daze with a goofy grin all day for days, thinking of Travis).
  • And Thoughtless jump-started me back into my intense need for non-stop music, and Kellan had me swooooooning and day dreaming, and wholeheartedly searching for “rock star books”.
  • Fifty Shades Trilogy: this was something I had NEVER experienced before and Christian Grey BLEW me away. I was devastated and elated at the same time, and couldn’t get enough!!
  • Oh! And Lover Awakened, too! <— I *heart* Z! He started me on my intense love for brooding, angry, untouchable, unattainable “sort of antihero” bad boys (which remain my favorite heroes) and he will ALWAYS be my #1. Do you hear that, Sherry!!?? Off my man! ;) Tee hee!! You can read this one as a standalone (it’s book #3 in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series) but Zsadist made even more of an impression on me as I got to know him (er… I mean be warned against him, ’cause he’s so dangerous) in book #1 & 2.
  • Okay the choices above are a bit “old school Maryse”, but I can’t help it. They are still my all-time favorites and are the ones that hit me the hardest. ;) But if you want to know lately, which ones have affected me hard and I still think about, I’d say Lying Season by Karina Halle (Dex is my newest favoritest ;) hero) and Surviving Raine by Shay Savage (’cause Bastian the jerk is right up my love alley)! Oh and these bad boys totally had my rapt attention too: Madeline Sheehan’s Unbeautifully and Real by Katy Evans. Now I don’t know that I forgot to eat with these guys, per se (except with Dex, I know I totally did!), but the fact that I still get goosebumps when I think back to specific scenes and can remember almost every detail of their books… yeah. Visceral.

And our fellow readers chime in (and OMG so many in here that I LOVED, that I had to quit commenting next to each post!) ;)

There are over 40 readers in Part One of this “… so good we forgot to eat” blog series I’m doing, and SOOOOO many more reader suggestions to come…

Sherry: Ooooh..lets see…Lover Awakened for ME too *brat* Me Before You was all nighter along with The Edge of Never, which I don’t think I put down once.  Slammed was another and definitely Present Perfect which I just happened to finish at 3:15 this morning. Oh Taking Chances too!!! Pulled an all nighter there!

Liz: Taking Chances, The Edge of Never, Falling Into You, Every Rose. <— sidenote from Maryse: excellent choices – and Edge of Never ripped my heart out. And wow to that “Every Rose” book… I haven’t heard of it but after that synopsis (eeeeeep!!), it looks like I need to get on that! YAY ME!

Jacie: Rebecca Donovan’s Breathing Series

Lisa: I agree, I just got done listening to it while driving back and forth to work. I spent seven weeks on this series and I miss Emma and Evan so much. I want to start the series all over and relisten. I felt ever emotion and more. I heard that the author is writing about Jonathan, I can hardly wait.

Sarah: The Breathing series by Rebecca Donovan. I had read the first two books months ago, but when the third one came out, I read them again, back to back. No lie, my stomach was cramping for the 3 days it took to read them. Total book hangover!

Lisa: Totally agree, see my message above…LOVED this series. I have NEVER read another that made me react like that but I want to. It was so beautiful.

Debra: Twilight, Dark Lover, and Real <—- sidenote from Maryse… YES, YES & YES!!

Alyssa: Definitely the The Edge of Never, Beautiful Disaster, the Twilight Saga. I threw New Moon across the room multiple times!!! And got so grumpy my family stayed far away. How could I have forgotten Hopeless!!!!!

Sara: JB Salsbury’s Fighting for Flight!! Loved it!!

Candace: The Hunger Games, Beautiful DisasterReal

Randi: The Lonely. And LOST BOY. Both from Tara brown. A Different Blue by Amy Harmon, Kaleb, Zane, and Travis by Nicole Edwards …the Breathing Series by Rebecca Donovan

Stacy: Present Perfect, Taking Chances, the Emi Lost & Found Series (OMG!!), and 50 Shades of course!!

Abby: With Twilight, I felt like a junkie needing my next fix but in my case, it was the next book.  Then I hid the book covers from my hubby so he would think I was on the same book when in reality I was on the last… BDB-love them.

Brooke: Thoughtless & Effortless. I read them both in 24 hours.

Fayza: The Opportunist is by far the best book I read all year!

Camille: Thoughtless series! The only time I stayed up almost all night and would read on my phone under the blankets in bed.

Jessica: Laurell K Hamiliton’s Narcissus in Chains (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter). I was on the last 10 pages when I lfet work and half way through my drive I finally had to pull over onto the side of the highway and finish the book.

Jennie: Really like the Night Huntress Series by Jeanine Frost….after BDB that is!

Louise: Fifty Shades. No question. I had no idea there were books out there like that. I was in a trance.

Rebecca: Lords of the Underworld Series.

Carolyn: Acheron.

Angela: I have read all of these but Lover Awakened, it was good? The other 3, well let’s just say I have re-read all of them so many times I’ve lost count! Some of my favorite books EVER!!! <— sidenote from Maryse: OMG ANGELA!!!!!! You are missing out on the BEST one of them all (and favorited by a GREAT MAJORITY of J.R. Ward’s fans… other than those of “V’s” books – he also rocked our worlds).

JaBraun: Fifty shades Series…. depressed that its over.

Grace: Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander Series. I’ve been hooked like it’s meth for 20 years. <—-sidenote from Maryse: OH YES!!! JAMIE gave me all sorts of shivers (of the good and bad kind). Now THAT guy will make you feel.

Jeanette: Thoughtless Series, The Blackstone Affair, Collide & Pulse, The Mighty Storm, those did it for me.

Shannon: Every time I read something by Colleen Hoover!!!

Aimi: The Afterlife Saga by Stephanie Hudson, literally lived on a couple of hours sleep a night cos I sat up reading til the early hours, didn’t wanna put it down.

Karon: 50 Shades was awesome. And for more than the substance of the books, but for opening many minds/discussions. The BDB series got me too. As did the Fever Series…whew. I was there for Twilight too.

Kylee: Thoughtless, Effortless, Reckless… I’d take Kellan Kyle over Christian Grey any day!

Judy: Present Perfect. That book made me ball my eyes out and I was up til 3 am the night before and 4 am last night to finish it.. And packing it in on my breaks at work. Omg.

Nancy: Edge of never, hopeless , sea of tranquility , Find You in the DarkCaptive in the Dark

Shawna: YAY LYING SEASON. Karina and her books ROCK!!!

Carrie: Who is the author of this “Beautiful Disaster” your all talking about? There are several in Kindle books. And by the way, mine is hands down the “Experiment in Terror” series! Dex Foray!!

Nancy:  Carrie, Beautiful Disaster is a MUST read. You will love it. They are making it into a movie, make sure you read it before the movie comes out. You will fall in love with Travis…

I didn’t see this mentioned and is one of my all time favorites, The Mighty Storm by Samantha Towle. Jake Wethers and Tru Bennett, totally in love with book and in the process of reading Wethering the Storm!

Maryse August 21, 2013 at 4:46 PM

Hi Barb! Yep LOVED that one and it’s up there. How are you liking part 2?

Joy August 21, 2013 at 4:47 PM

Okay… It started with Twilight, then of course, Fifty Shades put me into never never land, I read it over and over again, but I have to say since then besides Tack, Ty & Tate from Kristen Ashley, the one that totally grabbed me and kept me there was Truth, then Consequences by Aleatha Romig, the last book Convicted is being released Oct 8th… Can’t WAIT!!!

Liz August 21, 2013 at 4:59 PM

Every Rose is a great book! One of my favorites!

Concetta August 21, 2013 at 5:01 PM

Every Rose… one of those books you don’t mind reading again..even though you know what’s coming. (You will understand if you read or have read the book). It is top 5 in my books!!

Maryse August 21, 2013 at 5:01 PM

And crazy coincidence or what? I just found out it’s 0.99 cents right now, so I one-clicked it. I’m wondering if I should stop reading what I’m reading to get to it ’cause I’m so in the mood for it….

Susana Uribe August 21, 2013 at 5:05 PM

I agree with Concetta… Every rose is AMAZING! My only recommendation is to go buy a box of paper tissues! The book is really emotional and you feel really connected with the characters! Love it

Finest Line August 21, 2013 at 5:11 PM

Sooooo many great books listed here. Every Rose is a must read like yesterday!!!

Amy August 21, 2013 at 5:19 PM

Hey, are you guys talking about Every Rose by Lynetta Halat? My tummy is in knots just thinking about reading that one. I’m getting a bottle of wine ready for when I actually do, lol.

Maryse August 21, 2013 at 5:20 PM

Okay do you guys wanna read it together tonight? I’m doin’ it!! I can’t resist.

Sara Butler August 21, 2013 at 5:26 PM

I read “Every Rose” a while back and it freakin’ blew me away. i didn’t expect such a deep and emotional read when I picked it up, but it was incredible. Do yourself a favor and read it. I know how you love to have your heart ripped out, Maryse…this is totally for you. But, you’ll smile at the end. :)

Melody August 21, 2013 at 5:39 PM

We must add Love Unscripted, Love Unrehearsed, and Sempre!!

Stacy Nickelson August 21, 2013 at 5:47 PM

If you love a great love story then Every Rose it a great one. It will have you laughing and ugly crying in no time. It is such an emotional read not only did I not want to put it down to eat but I didn’t want to sleep. I was getting misty eyed reading what everyone else was saying about it and can’t wait to know what you think.

Courtnee August 21, 2013 at 5:58 PM

All of the above + The Keatyn Chronicles! Seriously, obsessed. Great list Maryse!

Bitchie August 21, 2013 at 6:01 PM

Cut & Run series by Abigail Roux, Ty & Zane are gonna win out over food (and sleep, and sex!) for me every single time.

Definitely the Experiment in Terror series for me, too.

Amy Lane’s Keeping Promise Rock, Making Promises, Chase in Shadow, and Dex in Blue, to name just a few. They make me hurt in the best way.

TJ Klune’s Bear, Otter, and the Kid, and Who We Are.

And yes, the Twilight series was a total non-sleep,eat,drink, live series for me, and actually, it still is.

Lisa Lauersdorf August 21, 2013 at 6:01 PM

The Heart Has Reasons

Nicole August 21, 2013 at 6:06 PM

Josh & Hannah, Truth, Consequences, Thief, Everything Changes, If You Stay, No Second Chances, The Mighty Storm, The Edge of Never

Amy August 21, 2013 at 6:15 PM

I’m all in for the Every Rose read-along. My boss is not going to be happy with me if I end up with a book hangover and a REAL hangover tomorrow from the wine I will be consuming with this one. I’ll just send a bottle of this polish her way to distract her if I’m too messed up (hee hee):

Melanie August 21, 2013 at 6:30 PM

Every Rose is a must read!!!!

Beverly August 21, 2013 at 6:31 PM

I’m in!! Just started Every Rose.

Maryse August 21, 2013 at 6:41 PM

Omg Amy that one is gorgeous!! Did you see Tina Reber’s friend just started a nail polish company. Gorgeous stuff. Lemme go find the link..

Maryse August 21, 2013 at 6:42 PM

Okay here is her post:

Tina Reber: Here is the link to her site:

Welcome to my shop for your hand-crafted boutique nail polish!

shannon August 21, 2013 at 6:52 PM

The Keatyn Chronicles by Jillian Dodd. I don’t want to eat until the next one comes out!! Fallen Too Far series by Abbi Glines and anything Colleen Hoover. ITA that Z stole my heart.

Krystal August 21, 2013 at 6:57 PM

I’ve read more than half of this list and totally agree and for the 1/3 that I haven’t read.. Well… Now it’s on my TBR List !!!! Lol. It all started with Twilight and my most recent one that was life altering was fear of falling and Real by Katy Evans

Linda August 21, 2013 at 7:02 PM

OK while I admit Every Rose has me curious I’m kinda sorta afraid I won’t get my hea. Great reads like Fifty Shades, Beautiful Disaster, This Man series, Underestimated, Blackstone Affair series, Thoughtless series, Unscripted and Unrehearsed, Real, Twilight series, etc. I don’t think would have such a profound effect on us if they had a different ending. I’m all in with heavy angst like Undeniable/Unbeautifully and Surviving Raine omg I could go on and on but my point is I want to read books with hea. I’m rambling but hope I’m not alone.

Maryse August 21, 2013 at 7:04 PM

Okay I’m starting “Every Rose” right now… just got home. :) I’m scared…. and excited!

megan mayberry August 21, 2013 at 7:28 PM

The Dark Light series S.L Jennings and If I Were You Lisa Renee Jones! Ohh and The Bronze Horseman series!

Amy August 21, 2013 at 7:30 PM

Omg, Maryse, are you trying to give my husband a heart attack by showing me stuff like that? Like I haven’t already blown my polish allowance this month, lol. Tina’s friend should team up with her and make a line of polishes to go along with the Love series, like this one:

The lady’s company name is Forever Polished.

Kat P August 21, 2013 at 7:41 PM

Since I just finished a book I am gonna jump on board and read Every Rose with y’all. Maryse where do I comment to tell u how I think the book is going?

Lauren August 21, 2013 at 7:46 PM

Love unscripted, beautiful disaster, left drowning, beauty from pain, the mighty storm of course the this man series

Anna August 21, 2013 at 7:49 PM

The Fault in Our Stars is the first book I’ve ever read that can elicit a physical reaction from me any time I just think about it. Agustus Waters will always feel like a real person in my life.

Will Cooper (Slammed, Point of Retreat by Colleen Hoover). I love him. I love him a lot. A whole lot. Who needs to eat when you can live on swooning and slam poetry?

Lynne August 21, 2013 at 7:56 PM

Fifty Shades, REAL, This Man, & almost any book by Joey Hill!

Maryse August 21, 2013 at 8:00 PM

Kat, I don’t really have a “comment section” for the book read-along yet, but we can make one in the spoiler forum (but I’ll be scared to go till the end ’cause I’m anti-spoiler.)

Okay here it is:

Or we can comment right here (spoiler free) or on the Facebook post where I dedicated a post to this book being only 0.99 cents today.

day August 21, 2013 at 8:15 PM

I agree with most of what you said but also Eversea is another one. It was like an out of body experience for me reading that book. Anything by KA Tucker & Samantha Young as well for me. Charles Sheehan Miles stuff also particularly the last hour (god that book was insane) & in the stillness by Andrea Randall. Also Dusty as well!

Lindsay August 21, 2013 at 8:43 PM

All those books mentioned are great! This Man Series is one of my all time favorites!

Bobbie August 21, 2013 at 8:53 PM

I am so excited you are reading this amazing book!!! I love it!!!

Laura August 21, 2013 at 9:03 PM

Keatyn chronicles by Jillian Dodd and her That Boy series give me book hangovers every time I read them. Danny and Phillip are the ultimate book boyfriends and all the boys from KC are pretty swoon worthy as well, especially Aiden.

Leslie August 21, 2013 at 9:04 PM

The Keatyn Chronicles are my favorite obsession. I can not do anything but analyze every single word that Jillian Dodd writes. Forget work, sleep, food, family…’s all about Keatyn and figuring out the mystery of who “the one” is amongst her many boys!!!!

Pernille August 21, 2013 at 9:22 PM

Lots of great books on the list ;D
My ultimate favorite is the Keatyn Chronicles series. When a new book is published I´m not available until I have turned the last page. Food? Pfft, not important ;)
Book number 4 was published 11 days ago, and I´m still on a book hangover.

Barb August 21, 2013 at 9:32 PM

Oops, I missed it! I am still absolutely in love with Jake and Tru in part 2. Unfortunately, I was interrupted due to domestic responsibilities….UGH! But getting back to it in just a few minutes now that everyone has gone to bed;)

Lauren August 22, 2013 at 6:42 AM

Wow, love Travis, Christian & Edward. But, I’ve gotta say, Micah from the Untouchable series is up there in my top 5. Rush Finlay is another. Oh, can’t forget Marcus from the Disastrous series.

Samantha August 22, 2013 at 8:19 AM

The Keatyn Chronicles: Stalk me, Kiss me, Date me, Love me. I dont know what to say. They are all fantastic. Jillian Dodd is brilliant and the books take twists and turns you dont expect. All the other books I love are all there already.

Melinda August 22, 2013 at 9:47 AM

Eric Northman (Southern Vampire Series), Hop Kincaid (Chaos series), Eric Sticks (Sinners Series), Gabe (Sole Regret Series), Cole Ackerly (Club Destiny series). :) ..

Tiffani August 22, 2013 at 9:52 AM

I have read most of these and I TOTALLY AGREE with all of them…heehee I dread the question…”what’s your favorite book?” UGH! Way to many to pick just one—well I can but it changes everyday :)
I really loved Ruining Me, Ruining You…loved those

Kine August 22, 2013 at 10:27 AM

All the Rock Chick books by Kristen Ashley. Nobody in my house got any dinner made by mom that week :)

Jean August 22, 2013 at 10:56 AM

Lost sleep and didn’t eat over the Thoughtless Series….had series stomach issues over that one! Love all the books mentioned (especially This Man Series) and have read the majority, but didn’t see a mention of The Hart Family Series by Ella Fox….they were really great! And I did love Kallypso Masters Rescue Me series….could not put the books down!! Now, off to 1-click Every Rose even though I’m scared! Great list Maryse!!!!

Reta August 22, 2013 at 12:09 PM

Okay, I havent read all of the books that are mentioned in the comments and I am going to take some of the suggestions. My recommendations: Z.L. Arkadie-Parched Series and Find Her Keep Her, A Martha’s Vineyard LOVE Story (its a fast paced, love at first sight story with a twist). CD Reiss-Songs of Submission Series!! Melody Anne-Surrender Series. Kyra Davis-Just One Night Series. JC Reed-Surrender Your Love Series. I am a book junkie that loves to read well written and fast paced series. Standalones are good to but when I love the characters of one book and then I know that there will be more, I am sucker and I go find them and read those too. Real by Katy Evans-Remington hands down is one of my favorite book boyfriends (#2) on the list to Jonathon in the Songs of Submission series. I know Im all over the place, but I have read soo many good books lately that keep me up reading til morning, that I can’t pick just one!! Fifty Shades trilogy, 3 days to complete..LOVE!

Jennifer W August 22, 2013 at 12:10 PM

I know that I personally love so many of the books that have been mentioned and have swooned over many of the the Alpha men in them. I don’t understand though how everyone keeps forgetting Kristen Ashley. I LOVE her books and so do so many of my “reader” friends. She has such an amazing way of making you fall in love with her characters and cause you to get so caught up in the lives of her characters.

Wendy V August 22, 2013 at 3:00 PM

Fifty Shades of Grey started my obsession with Alpha males. I read the trilogy three times in a row just so that I could discuss with my co-workers who were in various stages of the series. But the series that had me red-eyed, dog-tired, and completely hungover was Thoughtless. Kellan Kyle eclipsed Christian Grey, Gideon Cross, and Travis Maddox with the first crooked smile!!! I ignored the family, work, and friends for 48 hours while I read the entire series from cover to cover. No sleep, no food, no real “life” interactions while I was submerged, seduced, and satiated by Kellan Kyle!!! My hubby and kids HATE this series!!! They don’t understand…

Georgia August 22, 2013 at 3:30 PM

Christian Grey and Kellan Kyle….squeeeeze.
Curiosity from all the comments about Lover Awakened is leading me to “one click” again.

julie o August 22, 2013 at 5:11 PM

OK, here is my list….anything by Kristen Ashley (especially At Peace), Real, Beautiful Disaster, the Mighty Storm (and Wethering the Storm..
Jake, I was so proud of you in that book!) Crossfire series, Collide, Undeniable and all the motorcyle guys of Madeline Sheehan, Forever My Girl, just read Josh and Hannah and loved it, but my favorites this year were Surviving Raine (can’t believe I fell in love with that asshole, Bastion!) and Mid-Life Love which was great. I want Jonathan to take me to Home Depot!

Cherine August 22, 2013 at 6:04 PM

Great list but my problem is not eating…’s forgetting to sleep cause I can’t wait to see what happens next! ;)

Cherine August 22, 2013 at 6:24 PM

HELLO- Karen Marie Moning’s Fever Series, and Highlander’s for that matter!

Rose August 22, 2013 at 7:10 PM

The ones listed above are in my top list too. I love Kristen Ashley’s books: Motorcyle Man, At Peace and Knight-all very hard to put aside. Sylvia Day’s Bared To You. Pulse by Gail McHugh. Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins(YA); The Marriage Bargain by Jennifer Probst; Lothaire by Kresley Cole…and a few more!!

I just finished Present Perfect! This book is definitely on my list!

Kendra August 24, 2013 at 8:50 PM

I LOVE the Embrace series by Jessica Shirvington! It’s a YA read but angst and action a plenty with very powerful feelings. One of my favs. I cried for over half the last book (Endless) and can’t wait for the next one to come out! Gotta read this series people!!!!!

Aimee August 27, 2013 at 7:40 AM

My poor family were abandoned on the day I read ‘The Sweet Gum Tree’ by Katherine Allred and also ‘The Education of Caroline’ and ‘The Education of Sebastian’ by Jane Harvey Berrick. Absolutely fab reads!

shienna August 27, 2013 at 8:43 AM

Love Me With Lies series is definitely my top 1!! i just love everything about their twisted love story!! Top 2 would be Thoughtless series!! i just love kellan kylle!! The edge of never, Beautiful disaster, Love unrehearsed, love unscripted, Twisted!! These books are a must-read!!
